Two bills passed to legalise sports betting in Oklahoma

(Oklahoma).- Oklahoma is one of only tates that doesn´t have sports betting, but after several years of efforts, lawmakers brought it one step closer to reality.

Two bills passed to legalise sports betting in Oklahoma

House Bill 1101, authored by state Rep. Ken Luttrell, passed 66-29 off the House floor. House Bill 1047, also authored by Luttrell, passed 62-31 off the House floor.

"Members, if you have been around here for very long at all and just are not a freshman, you've seen this bill before. We've passed this language before, and I want to commend the members of this chamber for your foresight and being knowledgeable enough to understand the economics of sports betting in the state of Oklahoma," Luttrell said.

The momentum for the bills could be stopped by Gov. Kevin Stitt, who said in a news conference Wednesday that he did not support any of the sports betting bills moving through the Legislature. However, Stitt said he does want to legalize sports betting in Oklahoma.

"Nothing has changed. None of those bills that have moved off the floor of the House or Senate have got my input on them. In fact, they have excluded the governor of the state of Oklahoma from these discussions," Stitt said. "These are tribal-pushed bills that are only going to benefit the tribes and not the citizens of Oklahoma."

Senate Bill 585 also passed through the Senate this week. It would allow the Oklahoma City Thunder to receive a gaming license for sports betting. It will now move to the House.

If Stitt vetoes the bills, lawmakers can override them with a two-thirds vote.
